Question

A stone is suspended from the free end of a wire that is wrapped around the outer rim of a pulley, as shown in the figure (see the figure (Figure 1)). The pulley is a uniform disk with mass 12.0kg and radius 50.0cm and turns on frictionless bearings. You measure that the stone travels a distance 13.0m during a time interval of 3.05s starting from rest. Part A Find the mass of the stone. Take the free fall acceleration to be 9.80 m/s2 Part B Find the tension in the wire. Take the free fall acceleration to be 9.80 m/s2

Explanation / Answer

accleartion ob block => x = ut + 1/2at^2 (u=0 as block is starting from rest)

by substituting values

a = 2.79 m/s^2

now, mg - T = ma --(1) (for stone)

T*R = I*(alpha) (for disk)

alpha = a/R

I = MR^2/2 M = 12Kg, R= 50cm

by substituting values

T = 8.37 N

by putting valur of T in first eqiation

m = T/(g-a) = 1.194 Kg
