Question

Task No. 8 Points 1 Two answers are correct Which statements about the component shown below are correct? The air pressure at X acts on a cylinder surface. If the force exerted exceeds the spring force of the return spring, the piston moves and operates the contact set An electronic pressure sensor with digital output signal is shown. Instead of actuating mechanical contacts, the output is switched electronically Y is a knob for adjusting the spring force of the return spring When the piston moves to operate the contact set the connection between 2 and 4 is closed Y is a pushbutton to check the functionality of the pressure switch.

Explanation / Answer

A. Component diagram and the given informations describe that air pressure applied at X is exerted on the cylinder which is connected at the other terminal with a piston. Let the pressure generates a force on the piston is F and let the return spring force is N here. If the force resulted on the piston will be as F>N then there will be an acceleration of the piston according to the Newton's 2nd law. Therefore the piston will move and the contact set will operate also then. So the option A is correct.

B. In option B an equivalent electronic diagram is shown based on the result of contact set operation. it shows when the pressure p > 0 as the piston starts to move and the contact set operates. The vertical cylinder will moving up as the piston enters more compressing the spring and in the end the component changes the connection from 1-2 to 1-4.. This mechanical system is just shown electronically as a switch in which you may consider the output is digital as logical operation like if p<0, 1 is switched to 2 so the o/p at 2 is say "1" (Digital: On state) and o/p at 4 is "0" (Digital: Off state). Also when p>0, 1 is switched to 4 so that o/p at 2 is "0" and o/p at 4 is "1".
Therefore option B is also correct.

C. Using Y as a knob one can adjust the spring force of the return spring followed the Hooke's law.. If one can compress the spring turning the knob into the jack, the spring force will increased because the compression length decrease. we know spring follows the law N = - k x here where k = spring constant and -ve sign shows decreasing the spring length compressing it the restoring force increases and vice versa. So option C is also correct.

D. When the contact set operates connection b/w 1-2 and 1-4 is interchanged. Never 2 and 4 will connect simultaneously at the same time. This means option D is incorrect.

E. From the diagram it is not being recognised correctly that Y is a push button to check the pressure switch functionality. So one can take this as a wrong operation and option E is also incorrect.
