Question

A Jamin interferometer is a device that can be used to measure the refractive index of a gas. Two thick mirrors are used to generate and recombine two spatially separated beams of light of equal intensity (see Fig. 1). Gas cells are placed in each arm of the interferometer and a monochromatic plane wave is used as the illumination. One cell is kept at a vacuum while the second cell is slowly filled with the gas of interest. Figure 1: Jamin Interferometer The gas in the cell introduces a phase difference between the two arms of 2T(n 1)l where (n-1) is the refractivity of the gas, ? is the wavelength of the light and l is the length of the test cell. Note that the refractivity of a gas is linearly proportional to its density. (a) In the reading we covered the Michelson interferometer. Briefly discuss the key differences between the Michelson interferometer and the Jamin interferometer. Would the two interferometers produce equivalent exit plane images?

Explanation / Answer

operating principle of both of them are same.In Jamins Interferometer there is a gas tube through which light passes. The Jamin interferometer allows very exact measurements of the refractive index and dispersion of gases; a transparent pressure chamber can be positioned in the instrument. The phase shift due to changes in pressure is quite easy to measure.
