Question
Which of the following states of matter is generally associated with the highest temperatures? A. liquid B. plasma C. gas D. solid E. metallic solid I. r is half-filled with mercury, and a steel ball is floating on the mercury. If water is poured on top of the steel ball and mercury, filling the glass container, what will happen to the steel ball? A. It will float higher in the mercury. B. It will float at the same height C. It will appear to levitate. D. It will float lower in the mercury. E. It will sink to the bottom of the mercuryExplanation / Answer
1) Gas is the state of matter with highest temperature The particles in a gas are free to move and hence have more energy than solid or liquid. Particles in gas have no definite shape or volume and expand till they fill the entire container etc. More thermal energy means more temperature
2) when water is poured in the container containing mercury, there will be an upwrd thrust i.e, an apparent loss of weight , of the steel ball equal to the amount of water displaced by it. the stell ball thus becomes slightly lighter and hence it will displace less mercury to balance its weight lost due to upward thrust.
thus it will float higher in the mercury (A)
