Question

You are an advisor to the World Health Organization working on sustainable development. Your current job is to write a report predicting how our ecological footprint may change in the next decade, from 2016 - 2026. Describe the methods you would you use characterize our current ecological footprint, as well as how you would predict our ecological footprint in the future. Draw a diagram and write a statement describing how our human ecological footprint will change over the next decade. Develop at least one policy suggestion that countries around the world could implement to limit the expansion of our ecological footprint. This policy should be designed to maintain our natural resources in order to cunnnrt a healthy human population.

Explanation / Answer

Ecological footprint is the measure of the impact humans have on the Earth's ecosystem.

The ecological footprint is generally expressed in units of global hectares. It gives us the average biocapacity of all hectares on Earth.

Method of calculation:

First find the yield factor for the given land, then find the biocapacity(Area X yield factor X equivalence factor).

Finally find the ecological footprint. ( EFP = (Tonnage / Yield) X YeildFactor X EquivalnceFactor )

In 2008, there were nearly 12 billion hectares of biologically productive land and water available on our planet. Dividing this by the population at that time (6.7 billion) gives 1.79 global hectares per person.

But now in 2016, the world population is nearly 7.4billion. The biocapacity may be reduced to 8 billion hectares( 7.4/8 = 1.08 gha/capita). In 2026 the world population approximately crosses 8 billion.

Policies can be made to force the usage of energy saving bulbs and reduce the corbondioxide emissions.
