f)For melt X, what is the first phase to crystallize?
g)If a rock of composition Y melts what is the composition of the first melt?
h)For a rock of composition X what is the composition of the first melt?
Explanation / Answer
a) E is the eutectic point. Solidus as well as liquidus phases are present here (anorthite, enstatite and cristobalite).
b) P is the peritectic point. Solidus as well as liquidus phases are present here (anorthite, enstatite and forsterite).
c) AE is the cotectic line. It is a special case of the boundary line, in ternary systems, along which one of the two crystalline phases present reacts with the liquid, upon decreasing the temperature, to form the other crystalline phase.
d) BP is the peritectic line. The peritectic reaction also involves three solid in equilibrium, the transition is from a solid + liquid phase to a different solid phase when cooling. The inverse reaction occurs when heating.
