1) Give one marine pollutant and discuss its sources and impacts on marine environment.
2. Conduct research to learn about the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and answer the following questions including references:
a) When and where did it happen?
b) How did it happen? What's the total volume of oil spilled?
c) What's the overall impacted area? What's its environmental and economic impact?
d) What's its current situation now? Has the impacted area been recovered?
Explanation / Answer
1. Depending on the type of impact on the water organisms, communities, and ecosystems, the pollutants can be grouped in the following order of increasing hazard:
Substances causing mechanical impacts (suspensions, films, solid wastes) that damage the respiratory organs, digestive system, and receptive ability;
Substances provoking eutrophic effects (e.g., mineral compounds of nitrogen and phosphorus, and organic substances) that cause mass rapid growth of phytoplankton and disturbances of the balance, structure, and functions of the water ecosystems;
Substances with saprogenic properties (sewage with a high content of easily decomposing organic matter) that cause oxygen deficiency followed by mass mortality of water organisms, and appearance of specific microphlora;
Substances causing toxic effects (e.g., heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons, dioxins, and furans) that damage the physiological processes and functions of reproduction, feeding, and respiration;
Substances with mutagenic properties (e.g., benzo(a)pyrene and other polycyclic aromatic compounds, biphenyls, radionuclides) that cause carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic effects
2. a. BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill occured on 20 April 2010 at approximately 9:45 pm CDT,The well is situated in the Macondo Prospect in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 (MC252) of the Gulf of Mexico, in the United States' exclusive economic zone.
b. At approximately 9:45 pm CDT, on 20 April 2010, high-pressure methane gas from the well expanded into the drilling riser and rose into the drilling rig, where it ignited and exploded, engulfing the platform.
The oil leak was discovered on the afternoon of 22 April when a large oil slick began to spread at the former rig site.The oil flowed for 87 days. BP originally estimated a flow rate of 1,000 to 5,000 barrels per day (160 to 790 m3/d). The Flow Rate Technical Group (FRTG) estimated the flow rate was 62,000 barrels per day (9,900 m3/d). The total estimated volume of leaked oil approximated 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3) with plus or minus 10% uncertainty.
c. It impacted an approximately 2,500 miles from the site.
d. Dolphin deaths continue, oil is still on the bottom of the ocean, tar balls keep coming up, and nobody really is able to say how long it'll take to recover in 5 years, 10 years or more.
Tourists have flocked back to the beaches of Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida. Other coastal industries are still trying to come back. The economy of this region has been damaged tremendously.
