Explanation / Answer

a, Longer duration of shaking liquifaction occurs.

Liquefaction: The process by which water moves out of the soil and the grains shift and settle past another with increase in pore pressure. Once liquified, the sediment will continue to flow around the source of pressure until that source stops exerting any further force which results in downslope movement and redeposition of mud and sand. At that point the water will sink back into the pores and the whole mass will become solid sand again.

Liquefaction develops slowly and requires continuous pressure to be maintained. The initial pressure applied starts the pore fluid moving, but if the pressure is removed immediately the sand may not move. Continued pressure however sustains the flow.

During earthquakes the shaking of clayey soil for considerable duration of time by the shock waves of earthquake sent through saturated soil cause liquifaction.
