Question
This week, please look online and read the week’s learning guide and the textbook chapters. Then, research different forms of alternative (renewable) energy forms available.
Choose two, and then answer the following questions:
What does the term “renewable” mean?
Which two renewable energy forms did you choose?
For each, describe two benefits.
For each, describe two drawbacks.
Which of these you feel would best serve your community? Why? Explain.
According to The Energy Report prepared by WWF and Ecofys, “by 2050, we could get all the energy we need from renewable sources.” What is your response to this statement?
Explanation / Answer
The term "renewable" means a natural resource or source of energy that is not depleted by use, such as water, wind, or solar power.
I chose solar energy and wind energy.
Benefits : Solar energy :1) Sunlight is free and readily available almost everywhere.
2)Using it does not create any wastes or pollutants.
Wind energy: 1)It takes up little ground space and is very much available.
2)Does not produce any waste or pollutants.
Drawbacks: Solar : 1)Sunlight can only be collected during the day when it is sunny.
2)The technology needed to collect and use solar energy can be expensive.
Wind energy: 1)Wind turbines can disturb or kill flying creatures, like birds and bats.
2)Wind is not constant and reliable everywhere.
Solar energy will serve our country the best. USA has 200000 GW of solar potential which will be far enough to fulfill all its energy needs.
By 2050, USA will be able to install enough solar power plants to cover its energy needs.
