Question

On your web browser go to http://www.wunderground.com ; this is the Weather Underground web site from which you will collect data. When you get to the site type in Watson Lake, Canada in the search window at the top of the page. Once at the Watson Lake page you can start to collect the data you will need for this lab. The data you are to collect are: Longitude, Latitude, Elevation, and Average Maximum Temperatures. The Longitude and Latitude coordinates and Elevation are found in the upper left hand side. Please note it does not make any difference what units you use for temperature or elevation as long as they stay the same throughout the lab. Now to find the Normal (also known as the average) maximum temperature scroll down the page until you get to the Almanac & History. This block should have the current date in it. Looking at the page you will see under the Average (Normal) Max Temperature. This is the value you are to record. Part A Your are to gather the above noted data for 11 sites running from North to South. Five points should be gathered from the North American continent and five points from the South American continent. The eleventh point should be near the equator astride the North and South American Continent. These data should be collected for the same date and year. Note: Not all stations record Normal Max Temperatures so you may have to search for stations that record the necessary data ( a good way to learn geography). To find sites in a country type in the country name in the search window. A map of the country will appear you can then select a region which will list a series of weather stations for that area. Once you have collected this data, you are to graph the average max temperature (y-axis) by latitude (x-axis) in Excel. You will also graph elevation by latitude as well.
Part B From the eleven sites you have collected sub-select three of those sites (one in the mid latitudes of North America; one in the mid latitudes of South America; and your one site near the equator. For each of these sites you will gather the Average Maximum Temperature for the following dates: September 23, 2010; December 22, 2010; March 20, 2010, and June 20, 2010. Once collected you will make a graph (you can plot all the data on one graph or you can make four individual graphs) with Avg Max Temperature on the Y-axis and Date on X-axis. Once you have completed your graphs for Parts A and B write an explanation of how and why temperature varies from North to South ( Part A) and over time (Part B). Remember, heat as measured by temperature, is a by-product of radiation so you may wish to refer to your graphs from Lab 1 to help clarify you understanding of this lab. Also what is the significance of the dates in Part B. When completed submit your graphs and write-up in an submit as an attachment to your assignment.
