Well nowdays food scarcity in several places on earth is a big concern. There are so many factors that are triggering this situation. There are some ways also to avoid this 'lack of food' situation. In this essay I will try to explain the main key factors which are creating the situation and countermeasures to avoid the scarcity using the given topics.
As we all know that a good agriculture is directly related to the condition of the land on which agricultural activities are taking place. So a healthy land can produce a healthy crop. But there are some factors which are decreasing the health condition of the lands such as flooding, drought, unplanned drainage, improper uses of fertilizers etc.
2. Droughts: Droughts are completely opposite situation of flooding. There is no water at all. Each year there are loses counted in billions just due to droughts.
3. Global Wrming: Global Warming affects agriculture in various way.
In this factor temparature change plays the great role in the agriculture. Plants have their own way to ralate themselves with the surrounding temparature. So if the temparature changes drastically it creates a deep impact on the health of the agriculture.
Plant's life cycles are closely related to the season change,weather and climate. Plants have their own time clock to grow flowers, produce seeds etc. So if the natural way of season change is affected it also plays a great role in the growth of the plants.
Crops which grow well in cold weather ( mustard, certain vegetables etc) are getting affected due to the global warming
4. Decreased Soil Health Due to the Exccessive usases of Nitrogen based Fertilizers:
Fertilizers are used to increse the productivity of the agricultural lands. There are so many types of fertilizers each having its own nutritious effect on plants. Nitrogen is captured within a plant by Nitrogen-fixation process. Nitrogen is the key element of amino acids which produces protein. But if the fertilizers are used in an improper way it can be disaster. If the nitrozen based fertilizers are used in a great amount it can kill the bacterias helpfull for the plats by creating acid solution. I t damages the health of the land.
The last but one of the mst important factor is whether the farmers want to do agriculture or not. It is very obvious that everyone is seeking his/her own benefits. Now if a farmer finds farming cattle is more profitable than producing vegetable with less effort he will definately choose to do the cattle farming. So if the farmers don't produce food there will be a scarcity for sure.
Those were reasons for food scarcity now let's talk about the ways to avoid this situation. The initiatives must be taken from the grassroot. Proper harvesting techniques, proper irrigation and finally the proper selection of crops can make a change.
1. Polyculture Farming: Polyculture farming is cultivating different plants in a single land. Nowdays it is becoming very popular due to its reasons.
2. Hydroponic Farming: Hydroponic farming is the harvesting technique where nutrient and mineral rich solution is used to provide nutrients to the tree roots without using the soil. Though it sounds weird but it's really in trending nowdays. It is a very old technique but it is very useful. Let's take an easy example. Suppose in a rocky terrain where very less or nearly no soil only gravel is present. Plants gather its nutritients from soil by using its roots. If we can provide these nutrients by providing a solution directly to its roots then there will be no need of soil at all. This method can increse the agriculture in the terrains where farming seems impossible due to the absence of soil. Nowdays NASA is trying to grow vegetables in space by using hydroponic farming method.
3. Genetically Modified Foods: Genetically modified food is also very usefull to provide a good nutritious food to the people.In this method by breaking or adding certain elements in a genetic structure of the crops we can produce more food. The growth rate may increase so we will having foods in a lesser period of time.
Besides that the number of seeds can be increased, its quality as well as its size can also be compromised. Modified plants can grow in a terrain which was not helpful in earlier days. It may recquire less water to be produced which is very helpful in deseart areas. There are so many helpful features also. Nowdays various types of genetically modified seeds are quiet popular in market.
Thus we can avoid the scarcity and provide food to the needy peoples.
