Question
5. One of the points in the graph represents an island. Which point do you think this is? Explain your reasoning............?
6. The longest mountain range on Earth runs underwater, stretching about 70,000 km through all of Earth’s oceans. In the Atlantic Ocean, this mountain range is called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Locate and label this feature on your graph.............?
7. The Mariana Trench in the South Pacific is the deepest known region of any ocean at about 36,200 feet. How much deeper is this then the deepest point between New Jersey and Portugal?.............?
10. Oceanographers measure the depth of the deep ocean using sonar, a technology originally invented to detect submarines. Sonar equipment aboard a ship sends out sound waves that bounce off the ocean floor and return to the ship. The longer the time interval for the waves to return, the deeper is the ocean floor at that point. Oceanographers use the formula: D = ½ v *t, where D is the ocean depth, v is the speed of sound in water (5,806 ft./sec), and t for the time interval in seconds between sending and receiving the sound wave, to make this calculation. Use this formula to complete the following table of sonar data for two locations. Add the results to your graph and the table above for these two distances. Then, connect all the points on your graph.
Distance fromCape May (miles) Time (seconds) Ocean depth(feet) Ocean Depth (fathoms)
1125 6.0 ............ ...........
3400 2.07 ........ ...........
11. Explain why the sonar equation in #10 above includes the fraction ½. (Hint: The standard formula for velocity is
v = d/t, where d is distance and t is time.)..................?
Explanation / Answer
Ans- 5: Point 2475
At point 2475 the dpth is 0 while it keep on decreasing before it and show increasing trend after point 2475
6.Point 2475 depicting the decreasing depth indicates an island and is the possible ridge.
7- 17450 feet more depth than the deepest point of 18750 feet
10- point 1125
Depth (feet) 17.418
Depth ( fathoms) 2.903
Point 3400-
Depth ( feet)- 6.0092
Depth ( fathoms)- 1.005 fathoms
11-In the above equation 1/2 is used because this equation is based on time lag between spending and receiving the signals. Thus the effective travel time to reach the object is only half of the travel time.
