Question

You are in charge of managing water quality in a nearby lake and have made the following measurements of the fraction of submerged aquatic vegetation covering the lake and lake nutrient concentration measurements. The circled dot is the most recent measurement. Recent development has led to increased nutrient loading to the lake and the lake has become turbid with nearly all the vegetation dying off. The nearby town depends on revenue from tourism to the lake and the mayor of the town wants to know: i) what it will take to return the vegetation in the lake to its original state (please give specific values obtained from the image below); ii) the theoretical basis (from an aquatic ecology perspective) behind why this happened; and iii) once the lake is restored, how this can be avoided in the future?

Explanation / Answer

Brief about N and P) As the Nitrogen(N) and phosphorus(P) are the primary nutrients to promote the aquatic life in water bodies. But this only can be possible when this nutrients are present ypto certain limit in water. Other wise, it will affect the aquatic fauna adversely.

Answer 1) As discussed above, Nitrogen and phosphorus are the primary nutrients but it should be present in their permissible limit to promote plant life on water. Therefore, as seen in image, the permessible limit of N+P to get back the aquatic life on water again is would be 0 to 0.1 mg/litre. Because it is the region in image where the vegetaion cover of aquatic plant were most.

Answer 2) The reason behind was excess mixing of nutrients due to this the water became turbid and therefore all the aquatic plants were died. The mixing of N and P should not cross the permissible limit.

Answer 3) Once lake is being recovered, the authority should keep in mind that the addition of this nutrients (N+P) should not be excess their limit that is 0 to 0.1mg/litre (according to image). And, beside manually addition of this nutrients also keep in mind about other sources such as: waste/ polluted water, dump of industries, accidental leakage of sever etc.
