Question
Kevin is an auto mechanic. He spends 2 hours when he replaces the shocks on a car and 2 hours when he replaces the brakes. He works no more than 48 hours a week. He routinely completes at least 2 shocks replacements and 6 brake replacements a week. If he charges $400 for labor replacing shocks and $300 in labor for replacing brakes, how many jobs of each type should he complete a week to maximize his income? Kevin should do shock replacements andbrake replacements every week to maximize his weekly incomeExplanation / Answer
In the given data kevin works for 48 hours a week and it takes 2 hours for both either shock replacement or brake replacement. But he charges differnt labour charges for either of the replacements. The amount charges for shock replacement is more than brake replacements, so he has to do more shock replacements than brake replacements to maximise his earnings.
It also says that he will do routinely at-least 2 shock replacements and 6 brake replacement. By this we can say that he can do 24 replacements( 48 hrs / 2 hrs ) that may be brakes or shocks or both but they said he will do atleast 6 brake replacements in a week .
So Kevin, the auto mechanic has to do 18 SHOCK replacements and 6 BRAKE replacements to maximise his earnings
so his earnings would be :
REPLACEMENT
NUMBER OF REPLACEMENT
AMOUNT CHARGED
EARNINGS
Shocks
18
$400
$7200
Brakes
6
$300
$1800
HIS TOTAL EARNINGS WOULD BE $9000
