Question
You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the football stadium parking lot in Buffalo; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.395 kg ball that is traveling horizontally at 11.0 m/s . Your mass is 68.0 kg .
A. If you catch the ball, with what speed do you and the ball move afterwards?
Part B If the ball hits you and bounces off your chest, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 7.80 m/s in the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision?
Explanation / Answer
m = mass of the ball = 0.395 kg
v = speed of the ball before catching = 11 m/s
M = our mass = 68 kg
V = common speed of ball and i after catching
Using conservation of momentum
mv = (M + m) V
0.395 x 11 = (0.395 + 68) V
V = 0.064 m/s
Part B :
vf = final speed of the ball = - 7.80 m/s
Vf = my speed
Using conservation of momentum
mv = MVf + mvf
0.395 x 11 = 68Vf + (0.395)(-7.80)
Vf = 0.11 m/s
