Question
For parts (e) and (f) : Hang one of the bar magnets, or place it in a rotating stand set the current through the coil to 2-3 A. You will briefly turn the current on to perform the experiment, then immediately turn it off. Do not leave the current on for more than 20 seconds. With current on, hold one end of the wrapped iron rod near the NORTH end of the magnet. Does it attract or repel? Hold the SAME end of the wrapped iron rod near the SOUTH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? Bring the opposite end of the wrapped iron rod near the NORTH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? Now bring this SAME end of the wrapped iron rod near the SOUTH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? Turn the power off. Switch the direction of the current through the wire. NOW, turn the power back on again. With current on, hold the initial end of the wrapped rod near the NORTH end of the magnet. Does it attract or repel? Hold the SAME end of the wrapped iron rod riear the SOUTH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? Bring the opposite end of the wrapped iron rod near the NORTH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? Now bring this SAME end of the wrapped iron rod near the SOU' TH end of the bar magnet. Does it attract or repel? WHAT do your results from (d) (e) and (f) tell you about the magnetic properties of coils of wire? What effect does switching the direction of the current through the coil have on the magnetic properties of the coil of wire? What is the purpose of wrapping the wire around a piece of iron, instead of around something like a piece of copper or wood? 2Explanation / Answer
(1) the results from part d , e and f tell us that the current carrying coils produce magnetic field. they act as magnetic dipoles with one face acting as north pole and another face acting as the south pole.
(2) when the direction of current is switched/changed through the coil, the polarity of the coil gets reversed or the direction of magnetic field gets reversed. the north face of the coil becomes south and the south faces starts behaving as north.
(3) the wire is wrapped in iron because the magnetic permeability of iron is very high.
