Question

For our second discussion this week, I would like each of you to embark on some observational research and report back to the class! OD practitioners and consultants use observational methods to study all different types of individuals, groups, and populations, collecting data in the field settings in which behavioral phenomena of interest are occurring. While this can be time-consuming, observational data collection can offer valuable information with which we can then analyze and examine for issues, trends, and the implications of key findings for clients.

Each of you will identify a setting that you can conduct an unobtrusive observation this week - this must be both safe and ethical! As you observe, you will collect data. Here are some examples of observations that students in the past have conducted:

Demographic differences (gender and age range) of shopping purchases made at a store (e.g., Target, a grocery store). Purchases were categorized by size (small shopping load -> medium load -> large load) and variety of products (clothing, baby, convenience foods, magazines, garden, automotive).

Explanation / Answer

Study of Consumer behaviour to understand the correlation between store format and the satisfaction, understand the reasons for consumers choosing a specific outlet.

Stores studied: Walmart

Methodology: - Counting the average number of customers visiting the outlet at the same time on different days for different stores.

It was found that the store layout did not impact the number of customers visiting the store even if the store layout was changed.

Stores which had a better assortment of products had more number of visitors on an average as compared to a store which had less variety of stocks.
