Question

Two capacitors are in a circuit, connected in parallel as shown in the figure. The capacitances are C_1 = 4.4 muF and C_2 = 11/8 muF. The battery carries voltage of DeltaV = 10.8 V. 25% Part (a) Express the total capacitance C in terms of the two capacitances C_1 and C_2. 25% Part (b) Calculate the numerical value of the total capacitance C in muF 25% Part (c) Express the total charge on both of the capacitors O in terms of capacitance C and the potential difference DeltaV. 25% Part (d) Calculate the numerical value of Q in muC.

Explanation / Answer

a) two capacitors are in parallel.

so total capacitance = C1 + C2

b) C = 4.4uF + 11.8uF = 16.2 uF

c) total charge Q = CV = (C1 + C2)V

d) Q = 16.2 uF x 10.8 = 174.96 uC
