Question

Hi there,

I need help with this question in physics. Please show your work. Thank you.

Q1) Two wave pulses travel along a string at 0.5 m/s, one to the right and the other to the left, as shown in the snapshot. The coordinates (x,y) of the vertices, listed from left to right, are (2,0), (2,2), (4,0), (10,0), (10,-2), (11,0), where x is measured in meters and y in centimeters. Determine the snapshot graph t = 7 s later and find the coordinates of its vertices. Enter the coordinates for the 5 vertices from left to right, as x1, y1, ... (without units, similar to above).

Explanation / Answer

Given that

The initial co-ordinates are

(x1,y1) =(2,0)

(x2,y2) =(2,2)

(x3,y3) =(4,0)

(x4,y4) =(10,0)

(x5,y5) =(10,-2)

(x6,y6) =(11,0)

From the given data andfigure the velocity is along the x direction, so the co-ordinates of x will be changes but theco-ordinates of y will be remains unchanged.

Thus, after a time interval of 7seconds, distance travelled is =x+vt then vt =3.5m

Therefore x1' =2+3.5 =5.5m and x2' =2+3.5 =5.5m and x3' =4+3.5 =7.5m and x4' =10-3.5 =6.5m and x5' =10-3.5 =6.5m and finally x6' =11-3.5 =7.5m

Since the pulse is approaching towards the left. So, the co-ordinate measured from the origin will be reduced.

Here we can observe y4, and y5 and y6 remains unchanged
