Question

Hi there! Could you please include a detailed explanation of how you got the answers to the problem below so I can understand the process. Thanks! :)

1. Cinnamaldehyde cannot be distilled directly because it decomposes beiore te a boiling point (about 248C). How does steam distillatio au n avoid this difficulty? 2) Why does the distillate often appear appear milky? 3) What would happen if you evaporated the dichloromethane solution without drying it first? 4) Why would you never expect to get a 100% recovery of one pure component?

Explanation / Answer

1)

To carry a steam distillation you should mix cinnemaldehyde with water and start heating it until the sum of the vapor pressures of both components reaches the atmospheric pressure , when you get to this point the temperature will remain constant while the liquids are turned into vapor, when the vapor condenses it will produce 2 inmiscible liquids easier to separate one liquid is pure water and the other the oil you want

The steam distillation is helpful because it can be carried out with lower temperatures than regular distillation avoiding the decomposition of the materials

2.)

The milky or cloudy will be due to the separation of oils as the vapor cools, when the vapor is condensed the oild finds itself trapped in the water produced by the distillation
