Question

Tail length in Pembroke Welsh Corgis Like Manx cats, Some Corgi breeds have a naturally occurring mutation (NBT for natural bobtail) in the gene T-box. This autosomal dominant mutation causes pups to have naturally short tails. While variability in tail length seems to be determined by other modifier genes, like in cats the homozygous NBT mutation appears to be lethal in utero. Respectable breeders, therefore, only breed tailed to tail-less individuals. Pembroke Welsh Corgis born with tails are usually docked to conform to breed standards. 5. (1 Pt) You have a female Pembroke Welsh Corgi and do not know if its tail is naturally short or the result of the NBT mutation. Your dog goes into heat and before you can do anything about it, a fence jumper from the Pembroke breeder next door breeds with your dog. If the fence-jumping male dog is a docked Pembroke, and your dog has 3 tailed puppies, what is the likely genotype of your dog? 6. (2 Pts) If she has a second litter of puppies with the same male dog and one has no tail, was your answer to 5 valid? What is her actual genotype?

Explanation / Answer

Ans 5) Since after mating, all the pups are tailed, it is mostly likely that genotype of the dog is naturally short. This is because all the puppies that are born have tails and hence it is the dominant genotype that each puppy represents. The mutation is not there as it is not reflected as genotype in any of the puppies.

Ans 6) If the pup has no tail, even in that there is no change in the answer and the genotype of the dog is as such that it has short tails. It is because had there been mutation, the tail of pup would be short rather than being born without a tail.
