Question
Q#1: describe an example of an adaptation enabled by standing variation and an example of adaptation enabled by de Novo mutations.
Q#2: what are the major insights gained from Evolution of Development (evo-devo) studies? use at least one example to illustrate each insight.
Activity #10 1. Describe an example of adaptation enabled by standing variation and an example of adaptation enabled by de novo mutations. 2. What are the major insights gained from Evo-Devo studies? Use at least one example to illustrate each insight.Explanation / Answer
Ans 1. Example of an adaptation enabled by the standing variation:
These types of adaptations lead to faster evolution, fixation of more alleles of small effect and spread of more recessive alleles. DDT as we all known is an example of a potent non biodegradable insecticide. Continuous use of DDT over a period of time has made the insects resistant to this chemical, because of the adaptations in them due to the standing variation. Huge varieties of insects are found resistant to it now, initially they were not. Insects are benefitted by DDT by bringing standing variation in them but the aquatic life along with human beings are harmed a lot due to the problem of BIOMAGNIFICATION.
Example of adaptations enabled by the de novo mutations:
de novo refers to since birth. These types of adaptations are quite common around us like the animals living in the desert conditions have bigger ears for heat radiation while the ones who live in the cold conditions have small ears to retain the body heat. Birds have well developed vision since birth, this is also an example of adaptation in the class aves since birth. Trees develop corky bark to protect themselves from the fire.
Ans 2. Evo-devo studies are basically conducted and they are a part of the biological research, so that the developmental studies of various organisms can be done and an evolutionary relationship can be establishe between them. The main insights of these studies are:
