1. Botulism is caused by the pathogen Clostridium botulinum. The microbe releases a neurotoxin which binds irreversibly to the presynaptic membranes of peripheral neuromuscular and autonomic nerve junctions. This inhibits the release of acetylcholine, which is a neurotransmitter and muscles are prevented from contraction. Muscles controlled by affected nerves are paralyzed and respiratory arrest occurs resulting in symptoms such as double vision, shortness of breath, slurred speech, diminished gag reflex and muscle weakness.
