Question
When Shaun showed up for practice later that day his coach immediately noticed the honey colored crusted lesion on Shaun’s skin and instructed him to have his parents take him to see their family physician the next morning and gave him a brochure outlining practices to prevent the spread of his infection to friends and family. The next day the physician examined the lesion and collected some of the exudates from one of the oozing lesions for culture.
1. How do you think the physician culture the exudate and what would he/she be looking for on the culture media?
2. What basic tests could be run on the isolates in the microbiology laboratory to determine the causative agent of Shaun’s infection?
3. What superbug might they be concerned about and why?
4. What type of antibiotic might the physician prescribe to treat Shaun’s infection?
Explanation / Answer
1.
Physician will culture the exudate by growing it on the culture plate to see the microbial growth. The exudate will be directly streaked on the culture plate containing nutrients.
2.
The test to check that if the bacteria is Gram positive or negative will be done.
3.
The superbug involved is mainly found in the school environment that cause the infections like impetigo. The so called superbug in this case is the golden staph (Staphylococcus aureus). This superbug is commonly found in the school grounds and can be easily gain by the students. This superbug is majorlyy responsible for causing the infection called impetigo.
4.
The given student is seems to have the infection of impetigo as he is showing the symptoms like impetigo. So, the antibiotics like Bactoban and Flucloxacillin will be prescribed as they act on the Gram positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus.
