Subject: Participation of payroll in the collective agreement negotiating process.
With reference to the collective agreement negotiating process that the company is about to conduct with the union, I would like to highlight the need and importance of having the payroll manager on the negotiating team.
Having me on the negotiating team will ensure that the company is in a firm footing. The reason is that as a payroll professional I will be able to help the company with regards to the wage-effort-bargain. The wage-effort-bargain is collective agreement clauses that deals with what employees receive in exchange for their work. Being a part of the negotiating team will enable me to identify the pain points with regards to wage structure and grids, wage rates, benefits, hours of work, etc.). The advantage for the company will be that I will be able to identify all current as well as anticipated payroll-related challenges. Not only that I will also be able to address these issues proactively. Another advantage from the point of view of the company is that the company will be able to take a progressive approach that will be balanced against compliance.
The advantages, from my perspective (i.e. the payroll manager’s perspective) are that it will enable me to implement effectively all changes related to the payroll function. Implementation is the most challenging part of the entire process and being on the negotiating team will allow for smooth, effective and issue-free implementation.
