1. In the membrane filter method, there are separate confirmatory tests for the fecal coliforms as well as the total coliforms and the E. coli. Also, there are multiple filters or duplicates. Coliforms can be detected in 24 hours after filtration, by use of endo broth which saves time. The technique of mpn is time consuming along with being laborious as well as expensive and results may not always be what is desired. The filter technique gives better yield and is less expensive.
