Question
Discuss this opinion about union : ill use personal examples to address my thoughts on unions. I’ve worked with the union Liuna as a subcontractor. These guys get paid well, and are always happy to tell you how well the union treats them. My employer is great. Non-union, everyone works hard, the pay is great, and we are happy to say we are non-union. About 8 years ago, Kraft disputed to the union, UFCW, where my father worked. They stated their plant wasn’t economically feasible with the current high wages. My father was voted to represent employee interests as he worked under the union. He managed to get Kraft to agree to a contract that guaranteed the plant stayed open for another 10 years. An initial 3$ wage reduction that would have been gradually restored over a 7 year period. The Union and employees rejected the offer. And 6 months later the plant shut down. Union intervention and influence caused 325 people to lose their jobs in a 4,000 population town. Unions are double edged swords, and studies have shown that union and non-union work environments can definitely learn from each other, and that there is no clear cut winner for which is better or more easily managed.
Explanation / Answer
it Is absolutely right to term unions as a double edged sword. Unions restrict the number of workers in a company or industry to drive up the remaining worker's wages. They also retard economic growth . Over time, unions destroy jobs in the companies they organise.
Unions benefit their members but hurt consumers generally and more so the workers who are denied job opportunities. They pose a significant pressure on employers. However one advantage of unions to employer is that for wage negotiations the employer has to deal with their representatives instead of each and every individual
