benchmarking study profitable to Wobegon Electric Company? Show calculations 17. LO.1 (Statistical process control; writing) Statistical process control (SPC) can be used in any process with identified errors, defects, or problems. Assume that you are in charge of analyzing defect at a software manufacturing facility. a. What is the primary goal of SPC b. How would you define a defect in your organization? c. What defect information would you want to record in such an organization? d. Why would you want to record the types of defects? e. How do severity and priority of the defect affect your actions

Explanation / Answer

a) Statistical Process Control is an industry standard methodology for measuring and controlling quality during the manufacturing process. Quality data in the form of product or process measurements are obtained in real time during manufacturing. This data is then plotted on a graph with pre-determined control limits. Control limits are determined by the capability of the process, whereas specification limits are determined by the client's needs.

b) If data falls outside of the control limits, this indicates that an assignable cause is likely the source of the product variation. This shows that defect may occur in the organization and something within the process should be changed to fix the issue before the defect occurs.

c) Once a defect occurs in the organization, it is required to be removed within short span of time (i.e. as soon as possible). Once it is removed, the process is said to be stable. Then defect information needs to be recorded which includes the nature of defect, reason for such defect, resources consumed for removing that defect, time consumed for removing the defect, process of removing the defect etc.

d) The types of defects should be recorded to avoid such types of defects from occuring in future. If all the relevant information of defect is recorded then it will help the organization to deal with such type of problems or defects easily in future (if any).
