Question

The Scot Dumpy, a type of chicken (fowl) from Scotland, can exhibit short-leg length and normal-leg length phenotypes. A breeder crossed two normal-legged Scots Dumpy, and found that all the F1 are normal-legged. When the same breeder crossed a normal-legged fowl with a short-legged fowl, 1/2 of the offspring were short-legged and 1/2 of the offspring were long-legged. Following a third cross, involving two short-legged Scots Dumpy fowl, the breeder observed the following results among 200 offspring counted:

133 short-legged fowl

67 normal-legged fowl

(a) The breeder is confused about the results. Tell the breeder what the last (or third) cross might indicate.

(b) What is the genotype of the short-legged chicken?

Explanation / Answer

a)it is mendelian theory of breeding b)In short legged the genome is either both the alleles are purely short and are dominant or they are mixed type, one purely short and the other long but the short one is dominant and the long is recessive.
