How do childhood and adolescent mental disorders compare (are similar to) and contrast (differ from) to adult mental disorders? When trying to diagnose adolescent mental disorders, such as substance abuse or anxiety disorders, how effective is the DSM-5 criteria for this population? How often do you think professionals, teachers, and even parents - tend to over diagnose or "see or imagine" a child has a disorder, even when the criteria is not met? Is there research to back up your view?

Explanation / Answer

Mental disorder such as bipolar and schizophrenia mostly occur in adolscence and children. Most phychological illness progress along a developmental course begining early in life.

In case of stress, teen experience similiar pattern of symptom like adult but during their school year stress level are heigher than adult. Teen has fewer effect of stress on their body or physical health whereas adult have higher effect on their physical health.

Depression symptom are similiar in teen between 14 to 18 with adult symptom. in bipolar disorder both adult and adolescent has different mood swing pattern because of difference in brain development. Teen are more emotional than adult.

According to DSM-5 , anxiety disorder comprises of panic disorder, agrophobia, generalized anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder and mutusim. Diagnosis and care of children and adolescent with this condition require special consideration. DSM5 creteria is clinically useful in the case of generalized anxiety disorder in teen and child.
