Question
The results of the lab experiments are shown in Figure 4. What inferences can be drawn about competition between the carnivore morphs of these two species?
Figure 4 Evidence of differential competitive abilities of two species (Spea bombifrons and S. multiplicata, both carnivore morphs) when reared in the laboratory. Shown is mean (± SD) change in snout-vent length of tadpoles when reared with a conspecific (pure-species group) or a heterospecific (mixed-species group). The tadpoles were fed fairy shrimp and detritus.

In this experiment, both S. bombifrons and S. multiplicata were grown in laboraotry either individually or in combination of both. Then the snout vent length of the tadpoles were measured and analyzed for their competitive nature. It has been shown in the result, that the snout vent length incresed in S. bombifrons when they are grown up with S. multiplicata rather than S. bombifrons grown alone.
Whereras, when the snout vent length of S. multiplicata were measured, the combined culture with S. bombifrons was found to decrease the snout vent length in comparison to single breeding of S. multiplicata.
This results indicates that .when these two species compete for food, S.bombifrons are consuming more food than S. multiplicata and are growing more than S. multiplicata. As, S. multiplicata when grown up with S.bombifrons their snout vent length is decresing. Thus S. bombifrones will overgrow S. multiplicata, as they are competitively more strong than S. multiplicata .
