Question

My name is Alice, and I work in a small professional office environment. We have lost two employees this year one left for a higher salary and the other because they were moving. While I was training one of the replacements, Tom, he mentioned his salary which is significantly higher than mine. Tom will have fewer responsibilities than me, plus I have eight years experience in this company. Once I found out, I asked my boss for a raise that would be at least equal to Tom's. Iwas told that I had recently received a 50 cent per hour raise and that business is slow, so my request would not be granted. When I pointed out the discrepancy between my salary and Tom, I was told that it had been difficult to fill the position and my boss had to meet his requirements in order to fill the position. I said "OK then, I will be giving notice". My boss asked me to reconsider and he would think about raising my salary in 6 months. He asked me to think about it and let him know within the week. What do you think of this disparity in compensation? Does the boss have a valid point? Does Alice have a valid point? What do you think should happen and why? Please discuss the issue of compensation disparities in your group. Have a of you ever been in this situation? What did you do? What did you WANT to do?

Explanation / Answer

Boss & Alice both are correct on their resepective part.

Alice have a perfect case of giving notice but only in case he has another better chance not only in terms of salary.

Other than Salary , Alice needs to look at another aspect of the job like , job satisfaction, opportunity to grow in future.

So if all are same and he finds every where himself to be better than Tom then Boss must think about raising salary of Alice.

and if Alice is really not that much skillfull then he may be offered to leave.
