Explanation / Answer
1Q). What is a hominin? What are the traits of a hominin? How old are hominins?
Hominins are the primates, which belong to the family "hominidae." Hominins are characterized by their bipedal walk and upright posture. The oldest form of hominins was appeared 4.4 million ago. The species groups of fossil hominins up through Homo sapiens is given below:
Hominin species

Australopithecus anamensis

Homo habilis

John Robinson in 1950, developed a hypothesis known as dietary hypothesis. He proposed that there are two types of hominins, one was gracile australopithecine (omnivores or carnivores) and the other was robust australopithecine (herbivores). As per the dietary theory, the robust australopithecine were extinct and the gracile australopithecines evolved into homosapiens one million years ago.
