Explanation / Answer

Are Western companies (retailers) responsible for the safety of the people working for the companies contracted by these brands? Should they be changing their corporate strategy (if they have one) on this issue?

They are equaly responsible for the safety of the people as they are using the resource of the country in the form of contract. In the video one company representative was claiming like they cannot take care of builing safety and its a clear negligence of responsiblity. They should change their corporate strategy that they should focus on better working environment and better package to enhance the productivity from the country rather than moving with explotation with underpaid. Keeps employee motivates, definetely they will get retunrs in the form of improved productivity and quakity of product.

What if any is your opinion, as a consumer, toward these types of horrific events? Do you change your purchase behavior?

Changing pruchase behavior finally will affet the poor employees of the organisation in Bangladesh only. So instead of changing purchase behavior it is better to register case to consumer forum against the exploitation of employees by contract orgasniation and garment industry. They are underpaid and working without any safety policy. This collapsation of builidng incident can be filed as evidence for the same.

Name some other issues/stories (stories other than the Bangladeshi factory fire) and briefly describe why it is pertinent to our discussion of CSR

Tapping of underground water by a leading cola manufacturing company in world ( Pepsico) in India was one of the serious issues in India. Thye tapped water from undeground beyind the limits and these causes declining level of water in the nearby locations and also their factory polluted the river bodies through the chemicals and waste discharge. Companies in the current era focusing their Corporate social responsibilities just for the sake of media attention and in reality many are exploiting natural resources and work resources. They are ot bothered about health hazards because of waste discharge and polluting waterbodies and at the same time tapping excess water from under ground as well.
