Question

SECTION B wo situations shown in the figure below. In cell I, a transient e synthesis of protein A, which is a gene activator that turns including its own. In cell I, a transient signal induces the signal induces the f protein R, which is a gene repressor that turns off many genes including its own. a. What is the resulting transcription level after receiving the transient signal in cell I and cell II respectively? b. I n which, if either, of these situations will the descendants of the original cell " remember" that the progenitor cell had experienced the transient signal? Explain your reasoning. c. Wh at effect would an insulator have that sits upstream of the gene activator (ce"? Does the insulator also influence the self-activation of the activator gene? Explain. (A) CELLI transient signal OFF gene activator 1????????? OF turns on transcription of activator mRNA activator protein turns on its own transcription (B) CELLII transient signal OFF turns on transcription of repressor mRNA repressor protein turns off its own gene repressor transcription

Explanation / Answer

1.

a.In cell I, after receiving the transient signal, the transcription level of gene A i.e activator increases and this will results in an increased transcription of many genes as well as its own(self activation)while in cell II,after receiving the transient signal, the transcription level of gene R i.e repressor increases and this will results in an decreased transcription level of other genes as well as its own.

b.In cell I, the activator A gene is activated by the transient signal that leads to the synthesis of activator proteins which go on to transcribe many other genes as well as its own gene. Therefore,it will lead to proper functioning of the cell ,its differentiation and activation of cellular memory which can be passed to the other cells of the next generation. However,In cell II ,the repressor protein produced leads to inhibition of transcription of the other genes. as well as its own gene.So there will be no chance of passing the information to the next generation cells. So,in the case of cell I ,the descendants of the original cell will remember that the progenitor cell had experienced transient signal.
