Question

For questions 20-22, refer to the following scenario: if a diploid cell has 2 chromosomes and 2 DNA molecules at the start of interphase (Gu), how many chromosomes (chromo.) and DNA molecules (molec.) will each cell have at each of the following cell cycle phases? 20. Anaphase I a. 2 chromo., 2 DNA molec. d. 1 chromo., 1 DNA molec. b. 2 chromo., 4 DNA molec. e. 4 chromo., 4 DNA molec c. 1 chromo, 2 DNA molec 21. Metaphase II b. 2 chromo., 4 DNA molec. e. 4 chromo., 4 DNA molec. c. 1 chromo., 2 DNA molec a. 2 chromo., 2 DNA molec d. 1 chromo., 1 DNA molec. 22. Telophase (in mitosis) b. 2 chromo., 4 DNA molec. e. 4 chromo., 4 DNA molec c. 1 chromo., 2 DNA molec a. 2 chromo., 2 DNA molec. d. 1 chromo., 1 DNA molec.

Explanation / Answer

During S phase of the cell division, the chromosome undergoes duplication and each chromosome will have two chromatids.

During mitosis only chromatid segregation occurs.
During meiosis, in anaphase I the chromosome segregation occurs nd in anaphase II the chromatid segregation occurs.

So, the answers are
20. Anaphase I
The cell is in Anaphase I, so even after segration all these chromosomes are present in same cell, so the answer is b. 2 chromo and 4 DNA molec.

21. As the chromosome segration occurs in the meiosis I, the daughter cells of meiosis I have one chromosome and two chromatids till anaphase II. so, the answer is c. 1 chromo., 2 DNA molec.

22. As the choromatid segregation occurs in mitosis, the answer is a. 2 chromo., 2 DNA molec.
