Question

After observing the results from the blood agar and MSA plates, determine the bacterium which formed each colony. If you cannot determine the bacterium, state that it is still unknown.

Explanation / Answer

Colony 1, 4, 5, 7,10, 11, 13, 16 and 17 are Staphylococcus aures

Because they give beta hemolysis zone on the blood agar plate and fermented the mannitol in MSA plate which is specific character of S.au.

Colony 3, 9 and 15 are Staphylococci epidermis as they are non mannitol fermenting cultures showing gamma hemolysis.

Rest of the colonies are non hemolytic, non mannitol fermenting are non pathogenic Staphylococci species.
