Peptidoglycanas the name suggests its the polymer made up of amino acids (peptido) and sugars (glycan) it forms mesh like structure outside plasma membrane forming the cell wall. It is also called as murein.

The glycan part consists of alternating residues of ?-(1,4) linked N- Acetyl glucosamine (NAG) and N- Acetyl muramic acid (NAM). Attached to the N-acetylmuramic acid is a peptide chain of 3 to 5 aminoacids.
