This took millions of years, and yet we still see very "primitive" plants alive today 1. Apply the characteristics of each phylum to this trend of increasing adaptation of plants to terrestrial life. What specific trait evolved to allow each step "away" from water? 2. Compare and contrast the existence of "primitive" plants to the continued presence of ancient, anaerobic bacteria that can Still be found. How is this possible? . Explanation / Answer

There is a gradual reduction in the size of gametophytic generation and a concomitant increase in the size of sporophytic generation as we move across from Algae to Angiosperms.

Algae: Dominant gametophyte. Sporophyte state is reduced only to the Zygote.
Bryophytes: Dominant gametophyte. Sporophyte state is multicellular and is still dependent on the gametophyte for its nutrition, attachment, and protection.
Pteridophytes: Independent gametophyte and sporophyte generations.
Gymnosperms and Angiosperms: Dominant sporophyte. Gametophyte state is reduced only to the gametes.
In mosses, the gametophyte is the dominant generation. The sporophyte is multicellular and can perform photosynthesis. It is still dependent on gametophyte for nutrition, attachment, and protection.
In ferns, gametophyte and sporophyte are equally dominant generations. They both are free-living, independent, and photosynthetic generations. They are not dependent on each other for nutrition.
In angiosperms, the sporophyte is the dominant generation. The sporophyte is multicellular and can perform photosynthesis. The gametophytic stage is reduced to gametes and is completely dependent on sporophyte for nutrition, attachment, and protection.

Factors that helped in the transition to the terrestrial habitat.
i. Primitive plants are dependent on water for fertilization. Angiosperms produce flowers and do not depend on water for reproduction.
ii. A well developed vascular tissue (from pteridophytes onwards) helped plants grow away from water sources
iii. Multilayered lateral organs (from pteridophytes onwards) are resistance to desiccation
iv. Stomata show opening/closure in response to stress conditions

Primitive plants such as chlorophytes and cyanophytes are found in very restricted environments on earth. They are still dependent on water for their survival.
Ancient, anaerobic bacteria live in oxygen-deprived conditions.
