Question
10. The following is from a study published in 1946 by a Scottish physician who claimed there was a relationship between moming sickness and "excessive mother attachment": "A study of the emotionnal state of these patients revealed a common feature-i.e., sexual relationship with the husband gave rise to disgust .. I have confirmed the findings in many hundreds of women. In doing so I noted that a high proportion of them at marriage were unduly attached to their mothers." Based on these observations, the Dr. concluded that excessive mother attachment causes morning sickness. Explain whether this type of study allows the observer to conclude causation versus correlation. Is this an experimental or an observational study? Why does that matter?
Explanation / Answer
The doctor noted that women who were extremely attached to their mothers at the time of their marriage had higher incidence of morning sickness during their pregnancy. This is a kind of an observational study because there is no role of intervention. This type of study does not allow the observer to conclude the causation but only association. Causation can be established only by experimental studies.
