Question
6. In class we talked about how AGo for the creation of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate is +7.3 kcal/mol. a) Given the AGo values below for the hydrolysis of the types of phosphate bonds, circle the type(s) of phosphate bonds that can be coupled to make ATP creation energetcially favorable in the cell. (2 points) Type of phosphate bond AG° value phosphoanhydride bond 7.3 kcal/mol enol phosphate bond phosphoester bond anhydride bond to carbon11.7 kcal/mol -14.8 kcal/mol -3.3 kcal/mol b) Explain why you circled the bond type(s) above. (4 points)Explanation / Answer
a) The delta G value for the creation of ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate is -7.3 Kcal/mol. The delta G values during hydrolysis of enol phosphate and anhydride bond to carbon is more than 7.3 Kcal/mol. So, hydrolysis of these phosphate bonds could be coupled to make ATP creation energetically favorable.
b) The free energy released during hydrolysis of phosphate bonds in enol phosphate and anhydride bond to carbon is more than 7.3 Kcal/mol which is the energy needed for generation of one ATP. Therefore, I have selected these two phosphate bonds.
