Question

An organism living in a completely aquatic environment has several advantages: their body is supported inside and out, the current of water constantly bathes their cells and brings nutrients and oxygen while carrying away wastes, and rapid changes in temperature were prevented. When organisms moved out of an aquatic environment into a terrestrial environment, they still needed these functions performed. Many of our organs/systems evolved to solve this problem and take on a specific function once provided by free water in an aquatic environment 1. Use one of the organ systems of any organism to create an analogy between it and the functions water once performed in an aquatic environment 2 Compare and contrast your analogy with that of two peers Task 1: Create a new discussion post on or before Friday at 11.55 p.m. by clicking the "REPLY HERE*" post and reply with your answers to the Week 5 Critical Thinking Exercise questions. Explanation / Answer

1) The integumentary system (skin) performs the function of temperature regulation which was performed by water when animals were present in aquatic environment. Temperature set point is present in hypothalamus. When exposed to colder temperature, animals generate heat from fats by the process of thermiogenesis. When exposed to warmer temperatures, the bodies of animals coool themselves by excreting sweat through sweat glands present in the skin.
