5. What are your thoughts about increasing digestible protein to keep total energy intake low?
you think? Why does your body need protein? How does heating an egg change it from a liquid to a solid? Do protein or amino acid supplements bulk up muscles? Will your diet lack protein if you don't eat meat?

Explanation / Answer

1. Need of protein in body:

Protein is the building block of our body. Dietary protein provides its components aminoacids needed for different biochemical processes. Protein deficiency or malnutrition leads to conditions like marasmus and kwashiorkar in infants and older children respectively.

Proteins are major structural components of cellular membranes, cytoskeletal structures, extracellular matrix . Protein is necessary for the formation of structural proteins, molecular receptors, ncucleo proteins, carrier proteins, peptide hormones, antibodies, respiratory pigments. When necessary, under starvation, protein may be catabolized to produce energy. Protein is needed for maintanance of body fluid balance and homeostasis acting as buffers.

2. Egg changes from liquid to solid on heating by denaturation.

On heating, absorbing energy, the proteins in egg unfold their structure shaking apart the bonds between amino acid strings. As the temperature increases, water surrounding the protein molecules is forced out and stronger covalent bonds are formed between different proteins. Thus the whole of different proteins change to hard material.

3.  Amino acids are particularly effective in growing and repairing muscle tissue, because muscle tissues consist mainly of protein. Nerves will fire a growth stimulus, which causes protein deposits in the muscle tissue to increase. In case of undersupply of important nutrients the body will break down the muscle tissues to use its components to repair the tissues damaged, in case of physical training, athletics etc.. This will result in an unwanted reduction of overall muscle mass (atrophy). Sometimes unwanted muscle atrophy (shrinkage) is caused by overtraining or poor nutrition. Branched chain amino acids like L-leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine are important for muscle fibre (actin and myosin) growth.

4. If you don't eat meat, you don't get the protein from meat. But the protein present in all other sources like the vegetables (the prime source), cereals are available to maintain the body functions. Animals can not produce the all 20 amino acids in their body by themselves. These amino acids are called essential amino acids , they are 9 (easy to remember MATTVILPHLY). Animals depend on plants for them.

5. The continuous energy for bodily actions is provided by carbohydrate, mainly glucose. Brain cells gets energy only from glucose. Protein is catabolized for the requirement of energy only when necessary like prolonged starvation, prolonged fasting etc. So for energy requirement, one has to consume enough carbohydrate, but protein should be in adequate amount in diet for other body functions.
A high Protein intake can help to weight loss, muscle mass and improve health. Several researchers recommend consuming a minimum of 20–30 grams of protein at each meal. Consumption of protein at the start of the meal will make you feel full and will reduce consumption of large quantities of carbohydrate. Different food stuffs like eggs, yoghurt, oat meal, salad etc. are rich in protein content.
