4. A) When predicting the phenotype of the offspring from a dihybrid cross, why is it so important that each gene is located in a different chromosome? B) You crossed a tall plant that also produces purple flowers with a short plant that produces purple flowers. Assume tall and purple flower are dominant traits. The offspring were: 100% tall plants, ¾ of the plants produced purple flowers and the remaining 1/4 of the plants produced white flowers. What were the possible genotypes of the parents?pise 5. For the nedigree on the right individuals affe

Explanation / Answer

A. Mendel laws are dependent on the fact that genes are completely unlinked. Only when genes are unlinked, they can assort or segregate independently of each other to produce expected progeny types in the offspring. If genes are linked, their segregation/assortment is skewed and we can not expect the progeny types in the offspring to accuracy. Two genes can be found on the same chromosome (at the extremes) and can still be unlinked.

B. T = Dominant = Tall

T = Recessive = Dwarf

P = Dominant = Purple

t = Recessive = White

Assuming complete dominance,

Genotypes of parents to obtain 100% tall plants and 3:1 ratio of purple to white progeny,

1. TTPp X TTPp

2. TtPp X TTPp

3. TTPp X TtPp

4. TTPp X ttPp

5. ttPp X TTPp
