Question
A) during the time that has elapsed between the three dates of the photographs, has the equilibrium line generally remained stationary, moved to a lower elevation, or moved to a higher elevation? Why did this result occur? B) in comparing the three photographs, what is the evidence that the glacier has thinned in the ablation zone during the period 1960 to 2006? C) why are there no iceburgs in the lake on photo b? D) the annual net mass balances of south cascade glacier for each of the years 1959-2009 are presented in graphic form in figure 4.31, and the actual values for annual net accumulation or net ablation, expressed in meters of water equivalent over the entire glacier surface, are given in table 4.2 determine the algebraic sum of the net balance values in table 4.2 and use the result to refute or verify the evidence of glacial retreat based on the visual inspection of the three photographs. E) based on the data in table 4.2 in which year did the south cascade glacier come closest to being in equilibrium--that is, when was the net mass balance almost zero? F) in figure 4.31 and table 4.2 you have available a 50-year record of the mass balance of south cascade glacier. If the trend of that record continues, what is the probable future of the glacier?Explanation / Answer
During the time between 3 photographs the equilibrium line remained stationary. Because it has same mass of glacier in upside of equilibrium line.
in comparing the three photographs, what is the evidence that the glacier has thinned in the ablation zone during the period 1960 to 2006?
But down side of glacier the snow mass was very less in 2006 comparative with 1960, shows may be some effect of Global warming. The evidence was the snow was in contact with lake in 1960 in ablation zone. But in 2006 there was a gap between snow and lake shows that glacier was thinned down from 1960 to 2006. This evidenced from the photo of 2006 where there was no snow cap at ablation zone.
It was due to hot climate in lake area during melted icebergs
Glacial retreat observed from 2003 to 2011.The evidence for this is the absence of snow cap in ablation zone of 2006 photograph
In 1968 the net mass balance was almost zero
The study of 50 years data of mass balance of South Cascade Glacier shows it is in retreating stage. That indicates Global warming showing its effect on this Glacier. If same trend continues the snow cap thickness may thin out in near future.
