Impact of five non-point sources of water pollution:
a) Agriculture: The agricultural activities causes the pollution due to absence of planning for conservation. The animal feed and waste, plowing too often or at the wrong time, over-fertilizing and overgrazing can use the water pollution
b) Resource extraction: The drainage water where there is mining contains many chemicals which impact the water quality. The sulfur from coal mining forms acid. The heavy metals which are mined up gets mixed with water and changes the water quality.
c) Habitat Alteration: Construction of big dams and water channels for water transport or storage impacts the water stream temperature which impacts the ability of water to carry minerals. This changes the surface water quality, along with that the deposition and erosion of land is different at different places so the surface water chemistry largely depends on from where the water has passed and changing the water stream flow by channeling causes the changes in the quality.
d) Roads Highways: The oil spills, dust and dirt from traffic can be absorbed by the soil which passes to the ground water. This impacts the surface water quality. While construction of bridges the flow of water is obstructed and heavy metals and toxic chemicals from construction site can pollute water sources.
e) Urban Areas: Urban areas uses various kinds of pesticides, heavy metals, grease and toxic chemicals from motor vehicles, thermal pollution form man-made construction such as roads and roofs can change the water quality and temperature.
All these factors can change the quality of water and they are non-point sources.
