Question

1. On the Friday before a long weekend you take a 146 mile trip to Phoenix. After 1 hour, or 62 miles, you stop off for a half hour in Camp Verde for lunch. The remainder of your journey takes you 2 hours including stops. What is your average speed for the trip? 2. Waking up late for class one day, you drive the 10 miles to school at an average of 72 mph. Once on campus your friend texts you that class is canoeled. You tum around and make the trip home in an average of 55 mph. What was your average speed for the trip? 3. The graph below is the height, h(t), of a rock at time t (a sketch the speed, s(e), and velocity, tot), of the rock as function of t. (b) Using a straight edge, approximate the velocity of the rock at t 05, t and t 2. h(t)

Explanation / Answer

1) Total distance travelled = 146 miles

Total time taken = first half an hour + 2 hours

Thus average speed = 146/2,5 = 58,40 miles per hour.

2) Total distance travelled = 10 to + 10 fro

REturn speed = 55 mph and going speed = 72 mph

As distance is the same for both, average speed = average of 55 and 72

= 38.5 miles per hour
