(RF A Map Scale Conversions. In each of the following questions you are given a scale in one form Verbal, or Graphic) and must find its equivalent in the other two forms. 75 miles: 1, For a verbal scale of 1 inch 1: 4,752,000 What is the equivalent RF scale? 12 Draw the equivaent graphic scale with a line representing 200 miles. 200 miles 2.67 5 miles 2. For the following graphic scale: ig Cente : 114,682 What is the equivalent RF scale? What is the equivalent verbal scale? 1 inch 1.81 miles 3. For an RF scale of 1:1,000,000 11. Topographic Contours What is the equivelent verbal scale in metric units? 1cm 10 km Draw the equivalent graphic scale with a line representing 100 km (use your metric ruler for this). Topographic contours are lines connecting points of equal elevation, separating elevations that are higher on one side from elevations that are lower on the other side The diagram to the right shows how the 40 foot contour is fitted to a pattern of point elevations in feet. Notice that it threads between values that are higher than 40 and lower than 40. Allthe values above 40 are on the same side of the 40 line. The values lower than 40 are on the other side. The shoreline of a lake, seen from directly above in map view, is a natural contour line. In the diagram to the right, if water rose to 40 feet, the contour line would be the shoreline. The lower side would be wet the higher side 100 km 27 35 (10 cm) 47 B. Calculating Scale on a Map. The map on the next page is a portion of the Sacramento East 7.5' topographic quadrangle. You may recognize this area. The distance along EI Camino Avenue betwoon Fulton Avenue and Watt Avenue (measured from middle of the intorsections) is 5.309 feet. Notice that this is ike starting out with a graphic scale. Use this information to answering the following 51 22 28 dry. 1. What is the verbal scale of the map (as printed below) in each of the two following formats: nch 1659 feet 1 inch = 0.314 miles Some rules regarding the way topographic contours are displayed on a map . Contour lines cannot end within the map . Contour lines cannot bifurcate or cross one another .Contour lines must ultimately close on themselves (but perhaps 2 What is the RF scale of the map? :19,908 nol 3. How far is it along Fulton Ave from Marconi Ave to El Camino Ave? 2654 feet nol over a very large area and off the map) J-3

Explanation / Answer

Basic methodology used is as follows:

Verbal scale to RF: First convert both of the units of rf scale to similar unit preferrably the lower unit. For example if you have miles and inches, convert miles into inches else you will have inverse RF. RF will simply be the ratio of graphing unit/actual measurement and is usually given as

RF = 1 : (actual measurement/graphic unit)

For example in question 1, RF = 1 : (75 miles/1 inch) = 1: (75*63360 inch/1inch) = 1: 4752000

RF to verbal: In order to convert RF to verbal all you need to do is apply any similar units to both parts of the RF. And convert them into desired units on the verbal scale.

For example in question 2: given RF = 1: 100000 And since we have to convert it into metric unit then the length measurements must be, in m, cm, km, etc and not in inches etc.

So, RF= 1cm :1000000 cm = 1cm : 10000*100 cm =1cm : 10000*1m = 1cm: 10*1000m = 1 cm:10km

So if we parse above statement, of RF it will mean that 1cm on map is equivalent to 10 km in actual measurement

Hence, 1 cm = 1 km

Graphic Scale to RF: In order to convert the graphic scale to RF the method is first to measure the length of the graphic line and note down the measurement. Now at the same time note down the value this line corresponds to which is written at the end of the line. This will be equivalent value of the graphic line on actual measurement.

For example in question 3 if we take, 10 cm which is equivalent to 100 km this can be said to correspond on verbal scale as : 10cm = 100km

Hence, RF = 1: (100*1000*100 cm / 10 cm) = 1: 1000000
