Question

Oil is leaking out of a ruptured tanker at at sea the damage to the tanker is getting worse as the data in the table below shows:

Time (in hours): 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Leakage (gal/hour): 50 70 97 136 190 263 369 720

1)find the best estimate you can of the amount of oil that leaked out of the tanker during the first 5 hours.

2)find the best estimate you can of the amount of oil that leaked out of the tanker during the last 3 hours.

3) After 8 hours the leakage rate remains constant at 720 gallons/hour. If the tanker originally contained 25000 gallons of oil, use the results obtained in parts 1) and 2) to estimate the number of hours that the tanker will continue to leak oil before it stops.

Explanation / Answer

table:-

Time (in hours): 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

Leakage (gal/hour): 50 70 97 136 190 263 369 720

a)

To find the upper estimates set the first hour leaking already at 70 gal/h

and

for the lower estimate set it as 50 gal/h,

and so on until you add up all quantities for the first 5 (0 to 4)

50+70+97+136+190= 543

b)

for last 3 hour

263+ 369+ 720= 1352

C)

In question c, go one more hour (0 to 8) and this time subtract this result from 25000 and divide each result by 720 to obtain the number of hours remaining in each case (worst and best).

a)

25000-543= 24457/720= 33.968

b)

25000-1352= 23648/720= 32.84
