Question

Recall from the presentation that the dry adiabatic lapse rate is 1.0°C/ 100 m and the moist lapse rate is 0.5°C/100 m. Also, don’t forget that there is an implied negative sign out front (because temperature decreases with height)

Let the environmental lapse rate be 2.0 °C/ 100 m. At the surface the environmental temperature and moist parcel temperature is 15 °C. What is the parcels temperature and the environments temperature at 500 m? (6 pts total)

a. Parcels temperature:

b. Environments temperature:

Explanation / Answer

Since the dry adiabatic rate is 1.0°C/ 100 m and environmental lapse rate is 2.0°C/ 100, the environment will lose its temperature more rapidly than the air pacel.Hence at 500m, a )the parcel's temperature =15 - (5*1) = 10°C and b) the environment's temperature = 15-(5*2) = 15-10 = 5°C.

Therefore since the air parcel is warmer than its surrounding,it will continue to rise until it reaches saturation.
